Nigeria is in mourning following the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, who passed away at the age of 61.
Fondly nicknamed Dodomayana, Rufai was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers. His football career spanned over two decades, during which he played for clubs in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.
He represented Nigeria at two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998) and two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. Rufai was a key figure in the golden era of Nigerian football in the 1990s, known for his agility, leadership, and commitment to the national team.
His death came on a tragic day for global football, as news also emerged of the death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother in a car crash in Spain.
Tributes have poured in from around the world, with fans, former teammates, and sports organizations celebrating Rufai’s legacy both on and off the pitch.
