Senator Elisha Abbo has described the recently formed opposition coalition adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a “marriage of convenience,” emphasizing that the alliance is driven by national interest as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

The ADC was officially unveiled in Abuja on Wednesday as the platform for uniting diverse political interests in a bid to present a formidable opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking to Vanguard at the event, Senator Abbo said the coalition reflects the realities of Nigeria’s political landscape. “Politics is about interests—personal, regional, and national. What matters is how these interests are managed and aligned,” he stated.

He assured that democratic principles would guide the selection of candidates at all levels, with interim leadership in place until a national convention is held to elect party executives.

Abbo dismissed concerns over ideological differences among coalition members, referencing the APC’s formation in 2013 as a similar example. “Strange bedfellows came together to form the APC, and they succeeded. This is no different,” he said.

While acknowledging the pragmatic nature of the alliance, he maintained that the coalition is unified by a shared commitment to rescuing the country. “Any successful marriage must be convenient. This one is, and it’s built on national interest,” Abbo concluded.

He urged Nigerians to brace for change and expressed optimism about the coalition’s potential to reshape the country’s political future.
