Columbus Irosanga “Igbudu,” Renowned Nigerian Actor and Academic, Passes Away

Dr. Columbus Irosanga, a celebrated Nollywood actor and esteemed academic, has tragically passed away. The news of his death was shared by his colleague, Hilda Dokubo, on her Instagram page on February 6, 2025.

Dokubo expressed her grief, stating:
“There can’t be a shortage of Angels in heaven, but this loss is heavy on Uniport, Rivers State, and Nollywood. Our uncle Coli @colu_mbusirisoanga has gone to be with the Lord. Ikoli eh dein na mu.”

Dr. Irosanga, originally from Okrika, Rivers State, was well-loved for his compelling performances, particularly in roles where he portrayed powerful figures such as chief priests. He is perhaps best remembered for his iconic role as “Igbudu” in the 2001 Nollywood classic Issakaba, a performance that continues to stand as one of the highlights of Nigerian cinema.

Throughout his illustrious career, which spanned several decades, Dr. Irosanga graced the screen in numerous beloved films, including Otondo, Ogidi, Amanyanabo: The Eagle King, and Dons in Abuja. His dedication to his craft earned him several prestigious awards, including Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), Best Actor in a Drama at the City People Entertainment Awards, and Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Best of Nollywood Awards.

Beyond his acting achievements, Dr. Irosanga was a respected educator. As a senior lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, he mentored countless young talents, shaping the future of Nigerian theatre and cinema. His academic credentials, including a doctorate in Theatre Arts, reflected his deep commitment to both the art and the education of the next generation.

Dr. Irosanga’s legacy extends far beyond his on-screen presence. He was a passionate advocate for the growth of Nigerian theatre, and his influence reached across both the entertainment and academic spheres. He is survived by his wife and children, and despite his fame, he remained a devoted family man.

His passing is a significant loss to both Nollywood and the academic community, leaving behind a legacy of excellence that will be remembered for generations.
