PDP postpones NEC meeting as North central’s demand for chairmanship

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has indefinitely postponed its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, initially scheduled for November 28, drawing criticism from its North Central caucus. The meeting had already been rescheduled multiple times from its original August 15 date.

In a statement on Thursday, the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, attributed the postponement to the funeral of Pastor Patience Umo Eno, the late First Lady of Akwa Ibom State and wife of Governor Umo Eno.

“After due consideration, the National Working Committee (NWC) decided to allow party leaders to commiserate with Governor Umo Eno and participate in the funeral. The new date for the 99th NEC meeting will be communicated in due course,” Anyanwu explained.

The NWC expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the change, emphasizing that the decision was made to prioritize solidarity with the governor during this period of mourning.

Internal Criticism and Speculations

However, a senior member of the NWC, speaking anonymously, suggested that the postponement might also serve as a tactical move to buy time for the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, to consolidate his position.

“There’s a genuine reason for the postponement, but it also appears to be a calculated strategy. Many of the attendees could easily travel to both events. Those supporting Damagum are working to ensure he completes Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s tenure,” the source said.

Damagum, who assumed office after Ayu’s court-ordered removal, has faced growing calls for his resignation amid internal party crises. Critics argue that the indefinite delays in holding the NEC meeting undermine the party’s constitutional processes.

North Central’s Push for Leadership

The North Central caucus of the PDP has been particularly vocal in opposing the postponement. Former National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, urged the party to adhere to Section 47(6) of the PDP Constitution (2017 Amendment), which outlines the succession
