The Federal Government is taking steps to extradite Simon Ekpa, leader of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and self-proclaimed disciple of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, to Nigeria to face criminal charges. Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, revealed on Thursday that Ekpa, declared wanted in March 2024, should face justice in Nigeria.

Ekpa, a Finland-based Nigerian citizen, is accused of inciting terrorism and leading campaigns of violence in southeastern Nigeria. He was arrested in Finland this week, alongside four others, by Finland’s Central Criminal Police on charges including public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent and financing terrorism.

Finnish Authorities Step In

The Päijät-Häme District Court has ordered Ekpa’s detention based on probable cause. Crime Commissioner Otto Hiltunen stated that Ekpa used social media to incite violence against civilians and authorities in Nigeria, resulting in deaths and destruction. International collaboration was crucial in investigating and apprehending Ekpa and his alleged accomplices.

IPOB Distances Itself

Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has publicly disowned Ekpa, emphasizing that it has no ties with him or his group, “Autopilot.” IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful reaffirmed that the group’s focus remains the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021.

“We have no interest in Simon Ekpa’s arrest,” Powerful stated. “Our only concern is the release of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is unjustly detained despite court rulings in his favor.” He added that IPOB had consistently warned authorities not to associate Ekpa with their organization or the Eastern Security Network.

Government and Military React

Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Chris Musa, expressed satisfaction with Ekpa’s arrest, describing it as a significant step toward justice. Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, welcomed the development, commending the international community for its support in combating terrorism in Nigeria.

“Simon Ekpa has been a key figure in sponsoring violence in the South-East,” Buba said. “His arrest is a testament to the global resolve to end terrorism.”

Public Outcry

Ekpa has faced widespread criticism for his actions, including issuing sit-at-home orders and attempting to disrupt the 2023 general elections in the South-East. These actions reportedly led to economic losses, deaths, and destruction of property. A global petition signed by thousands of Nigerians previously called for his arrest.

IPOB’s political wing also supported Ekpa’s extradition, with spokesman Nwachukwu Emereonye noting that his actions had caused immense harm. “Simon Ekpa must face justice for the loss of innocent lives and destruction of businesses in the South-East,” he stated.

The Finnish government has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, underscoring its commitment to combating terrorism. As Nigeria seeks Ekpa’s extradition, all eyes remain on the unfolding legal process and its potential implications for justice and security in the South-East.
