The 36 state governors have pledged their commitment to collaborating with the National Assembly to ensure the success of the ongoing process to amend the 1999 Constitution.

The governors made this commitment following a briefing by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, during a meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) held in Abuja on Wednesday night.

In addition, after a presentation by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, the governors assured their readiness to partner with the Federal Government on proposed reforms in the education sector.

Kalu, who also chairs the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review, explained to journalists that the briefing aimed to update the governors on the Legislature’s progress regarding constitutional amendments.

Accompanied by other House members, Kalu stated: “We informed the governors that over 161 areas have been identified for amendment in the Constitution, and we will provide them with detailed breakdowns in subsequent engagements.”
