President Bola Tinubu’s administration has officially dissolved the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development as part of a major government restructuring aimed at improving efficiency.
This decision was made during the ongoing Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House in Abuja, as reported by Bayo Ononuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, via his verified X account.
A new Ministry of Regional Development will be established to oversee regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, and North East Development Commission.
The responsibilities of the now-defunct Ministry of Sports Development will be transferred to the National Sports Commission.
Additionally, the FEC has approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy.
These changes are part of President Tinubu’s initiative to enhance government performance. The dissolution of the Niger Delta Ministry addresses overlaps with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which will continue its focus on sustainable development in the region.
Onanuga confirmed, “President Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council have scrapped the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development. The new Ministry of Regional Development will manage all regional development commissions, while the National Sports Commission will take on the role of the former sports ministry. The FEC also approved merging the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy during today’s meeting in Abuja.”
