The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has attributed the latest collapse of the national grid to the explosion of a current transformer at the 330kV Jebba Transmission Substation.
In a statement, TCN explained that the explosion triggered the protection system, which activated the busbars to contain the blast, thus preventing a fire and protecting nearby equipment.
Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs, stated, “The report from the NCC indicates that the bus section of a current transformer exploded at 330kV Jebba Transmission Substation. As anticipated, the protection system was activated, opening the busbars to limit the explosion’s impact.”
She characterized the incident as a temporary disturbance, noting that it occurred around 8:15 AM on October 19, 2024.
TCN further reported that the protection system’s activation caused a temporary disruption in the grid. Their engineers at the Jebba station successfully isolated the faulty transformer and reconfigured the busbar setup, restoring power to the station and other grid areas.
