Justice Sylvanus Oriji of the Abuja High Court acquitted former Kogi West senator Dino Melaye of charges brought by the Federal Government on Monday. This legal struggle has spanned six years.
In a post on X, Melaye announced that he was cleared of two charges related to allegedly providing false information about an assassination attempt on his life in 2017.
The case experienced significant delays, including the unfortunate death of Judge Aromeh Akogu during a crossover service on December 31, 2017.
The Attorney General formally charged Melaye on January 31, 2018, asserting that his claims were unfounded following an investigation into the alleged assassination attempt in his hometown of Ayetoro-Gbede, Kogi State. Melaye pleaded not guilty on March 1, 2018.
In July 2018, he accused the Kogi State police of attempting to kill him after his security team reportedly shot at officers during a ‘stop and search’ operation in Mopa. He further claimed, in March 2019, that the Kogi State government conspired against him, a charge the state authorities denied.
Celebrating the ruling on social media, Melaye expressed gratitude to his legal team and reaffirmed his faith in divine justice: “I take life as it comes, but in all the vicissitudes of life, I trust in God only. He is always with the just.”
