Augustine Cerezo Eguavoen, the interim coach of the Super Eagles, has dismissed reports suggesting he has resigned from his position following the team’s goalless draw with Rwanda on Tuesday, according to Soccernet.ng.

Eguavoen, who assumed the role this month due to the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) inability to secure a new coach, is also the NFF’s technical director. He has previously taken on the interim coaching role on multiple occasions.

His most recent stint with the Super Eagles was during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers, where he guided the team to the round of 16.

Eguavoen began his current tenure with a promising 3-0 victory over Benin in the opening game of the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers. However, his second match, a goalless draw against Rwanda in Kigali, sparked speculation about his departure from the role.

The 59-year-old has refuted these resignation rumors, stating that he plans to discuss future steps with the NFF.

“It’s unfortunate that incorrect information is being spread. Given the current situation, we don’t need negative stories,” Eguavoen remarked, as reported by The Cable. “When I saw the resignation reports, I was concerned. What people are reading is not true. I am still very much in charge and responsible for the Super Eagles at this time.”

The NFF has been slow to appoint a new coach since Finidi George’s departure in June. With Eguavoen’s recent performances, he may continue leading the team through the next round of qualifiers in October.
