A magistrate’s court in Ibadan, Oyo State, has sentenced Alloy Paulinus to three years in correctional service custody for assaulting operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The Acting Corps Public Education Officer of the FRSC, Olusegun Ogungbemide, stated yesterday that Magistrate Mrs. Olatunji read the charge of assault to the defendant, which is contrary to and punishable under Section 356(1) of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. 2 Laws of Oyo State, Nigeria 2000.

Paulinus pleaded guilty to the charge. His counsel pleaded for leniency, citing that Paulinus was a first-time offender who was remorseful after spending two days in police custody. The counsel also requested the release of the truck held by the FRSC since June 12, 2024.

The court, considering the plea and the defendant’s confession, sentenced Paulinus to three years in correctional custody, with an option of a N50,000 fine. The magistrate also warned Paulinus against assaulting or being rude to security personnel while performing their duties. Additionally, the court ordered the release of the truck, noting that the medical expenses for the FRSC staff who were assaulted had been paid.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed satisfaction with the judgment and applauded the judiciary for its swift justice. He warned drivers against assaulting FRSC patrols, stating that such actions would no longer be tolerated.
