Dr. Odunayo Ani, President of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nigeria, has expressed gratitude to Nigerian seafarers for their essential role in sustaining global trade, coinciding with the Day of the Seafarer on June 25, 2024.
Mrs. Lilian Nneji, Secretary General of WISTA, in a statement obtained by Daily Review Online, conveyed Dr. Ani’s appreciation, highlighting the theme of this year’s celebration: ‘Seafarers’ contribution to making the maritime sector a safer workplace.’ Dr. Ani, also a director at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), commended seafarers for their commitment to safety and their substantial efforts at sea.
Dr. Ani emphasized that every aspect of maritime work requires strict adherence to safety protocols, and seafarers worldwide have been exemplary in ensuring smooth and sustainable trade processes. She acknowledged the dedication of marine engineers, ship captains, and all others involved in the maritime industry.
“On this 2024 Day of the Seafarer, WISTA Nigeria proudly appreciates seafarers worldwide, especially our Nigerian seafarers. We are proud of you and grateful for the sacrifices you make to facilitate global trade.
“There is no doubt about your safety-consciousness in the line of duty, which is why activities like shipping, fishing, deep-sea mining, and travel continue to thrive,” Dr. Ani stated.
The Day of the Seafarer, observed on June 25, was established by a resolution at the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila, which adopted the revised STCW Convention. The day aims to recognize the unique contributions of seafarers to international trade, the global economy, and civil society.
The resolution encourages governments, shipping organizations, companies, shipowners, and all related parties to actively and appropriately celebrate the Day of the Seafarer.
