An uninspired Netherlands side needed two late goals and the benefit of some poor goalkeeping to see off Senegal in the opening game of their World Cup bid.
Both sides started brightly and there were big chances at either end despite the first half ending goal-less.
Frenkie de Jong spurned a big opportunity when he took too much time when through against Édouard Mendy before Steven Berghuis flashed an inventive volley over the bar.
Dutch debutant Andries Noppert in goal was finally called upon on 65 minutes, getting down smartly to his left to beat away an effort from Boulaye Dia before beating away Idrissa Gueye’s attempt shortly afterwards.
With six minutes remaining, the opener finally arrived as Frenkie de Jong’s perfect cross was met by a Gakpo header after Mendy came a long way to punch the delivery but didn’t come close, allowing the PSV man to strike.
And Mendy was at fault again in the ninth minute of injury-time when he spilled a Memphis effort into the path of substitute Davy Klaassen, who netted from close range to put the seal on a largely disappointing contest.
